About Franciscan Sisters of The Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (FIHM) is a Catholic Religious Congregation founded on 16th October 1844 in Pondicherry by Servant of God Rev. Fr. Louis Savinien Dupuis, MEP. Deeply rooted in the Franciscan spirit of simplicity, humility, and love for creation, and inspired by devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Congregation continues to be a beacon of faith, hope, and service. Guided by the charism — “Sanctification of Sisters for the Sanctification of Women” — the FIHM sisters embrace a life of holiness, striving first for their own sanctification so that, through their witness, they may uplift, empower, and sanctify women, who in turn transform families and society.
From its very beginning, the Congregation has been committed to responding to the needs of the times. The sisters devote themselves to the education of girls, especially the poor and marginalized, believing that educating a woman means educating a family and an entire generation. Through their ministry of healthcare, they reach out with compassion to the sick and suffering, offering healing and comfort. In evangelization and catechesis, they bring the light of the Gospel to the faithful, nurturing faith and strengthening Christian values. In the field of social service, they stand alongside the oppressed, empowering women through self-help initiatives, skill training, and community development.
Today, the Congregation is organized into Provinces and Regions — Lourdes, St. Joseph, Infant Jesus, Assisi, and Dupuis — and has spread beyond India to other parts of the world, carrying the same flame of love and service across cultures. Wherever they are, the FIHM sisters remain faithful to their founding vision: to be instruments of God’s love, channels of peace, and signs of hope. Their mission continues to echo the timeless call of Christ — to serve, to sanctify, and to uplift, especially women, so that society may be renewed in justice, harmony, and the spirit of the Gospel
